Minutes of the Illinois Swimming Official’s Association Regular Meeting

Saturday, February 27, 2010 - Evanston Township High School

The meeting was called to order by President Phil Dawkins at 9:30AM. There were 27 members present.

Phil introduced Ron McGraw from the IHSA. Ron thanked those present for the excellent job during Friday's preliminaries. It was a long day and the officials made it look easy.

Phil introduced former New Trier coach Dave Robertson, who was responsible for starting the ISOA in 1957. Dave thanked everyone for continuing the job he started.

The minutes from the November 2009 meeting were accepted as mailed to the membership and published on our website.

Treasurer's report from Al Wienke: Our current bank balance is $1500.92. Income this period was $104.50 and expenses were $410.21. Expenses included website fees, the ISOA Sectional Meeting, the girl's ISA banquet and various mailings. Our membership remains at 110. Al also proposed increasing our $75 donation to the ISA to $100 for the next two banquets, as we have the money to do so. Voice count in favor of the increase passed.

Nominating committee report from Mark Anderson: Bill Bavirsha is running unopposed for Vice President and Nancy Myer and Tom Kite are running for Secretary. Ballots were completed and tallied by Mark and Mike Wolz. Bill Bavirsha was elected Vice President and Tom Kite elected as Secretary. The new officers will assume their roles on April 1, 2010.

Phil spoke briefly about the IHSA Official's Conference in Peoria, which will be held July 16-17, 2010. There will be a swimming and diving clinic the morning of July 17, and two mini-sessions on swimming topics in the afternoon this year.

Mike Hutton mentioned that a re-design of the ISOA website is scheduled to be available before the girl's season begins in August 2010.

A discussion regarding a change to the IHSA swimming and diving official's uniform resulted in the majority of members present supporting the traditional all white uniform currently worn. As a result, the ISOA will not recommend a change to the IHSA at this time.

After discussion and a voice vote, it was decided that the ISOA directory will contain our members' information, and we will not return to including school information in it.

Renee Miller from the ISA spoke briefly about the Boy's State Banquet, which will be held this year on Wednesday, March 10. The cost is $25. Renee left a registration form for the dinner and sponsorship information for events and awards as well.

Awards committee: Kim Ramsey and Nancy Myer presented the 2010 ISOA Official's Awards as follows:

Rookie of the Year: Steve Fedota, Palatine

Most Improved: Mark Markwell, South Elgin

Official of the Year: Glenn Clayton, Streator

Phil addressed the meeting again and expressed his thanks to the following members: Nancy Myer, Kim Ramsey and Orv Kersten for their efforts on the Awards Committee; A.C. Buehler, Nancy Myer and Mark Anderson for the Nominating Committee; Mike Hutton and his wife Lori for their work on our website; Kevin Moss for being our "tech guy;" Barbe Richardson and Mark Anderson for their service to the ISOA; and Mike Hutton for serving as a liason with Maine West HS to arrange our pre-Sectional official's meetings.

Bart Smith has again arranged a special ISOA rate of $49 per night plus tax at the Fairfield Inn in Glenview for the 2010 Girl's State Final in November. Please call Assistant Manager Laura Staniukyniene at (847) 299-1600 x709 for reservations.

Ollie Dunson, Kim Ramsey and Bill Bavirsha encouraged all members to work City of Chicago meets if they have the opportunity to do so. The experience can be quite different than what many of us are used to. Those swimmers face many challenges, and will be very appreciative of any help our members can offer.

Tom Strunk has air horns available for sale and has previously indicated that he will donate all profits back to the ISOA. Tom can be reached at (847) 674-4957 to arrange a purchase.

Motion for adjournment by Dennis Yard, 2nd by Bart Smith. Motion passed, and the meeting was adjourned at 10:30AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara E. Richardson, Secretary
